What do clients want?
As a makeup artist occasionally I get asked to do vintage makeup. Which makes me very excited...well whats not to love about it! There are some seriously glam decades to choose from. Which brings me to my next point ... what look are they asking for? Vintage makeup could mean 1920s to one person and 1950s to another. Therefore it really important to find out what decade they want.
Looking through the decades
1920’s - Flapper era. Rounded heavy black eye makeup with moroon dark lips.
1930’s - 1940’s - during world war there was not a focus on being glam. Usually a classic red lip
1950’s - Glam returns and there was Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe with a full coverage, matte skin and winged eyeliner and red lips
1960’s - Pastel colours were in fashion. Twiggy was a fashion icon with drawn on eyelashes.
1970’s - Boho chic with lots of glitters and metallics
1980’s - similar to 1970s however more eccentric with men such as Boy George wearing full makeup
Quick quide to 1950s
For the eyeliner start in the centre and work outwards, kick out the eyeliner above the outer edge by gently pulling the skin up and out. Bring eyeliner into inner eye but not into the tear duct.
Add flesh colour in the tightline/waterline and mascara to top and bottom lashes.
Touch up foundation now.
Contour using cream contour. Add contour to hollows of cheeks, around forehead, under jaw and down sides of nose.
Highlight with matte concealer under eye in a V shape using a concealer 2 shades lighter. Never hightlight with shimmer.
Set with powders which are two different shades to keep the effects of contouring.
Add blush which must be pink using a larger brush on the apples of the cheeks.
Lips should be matte red.
